(-)-Synephrine is an amine that belongs to the Rutaceae family. It has been shown to have a thermogenic effect in rats, which may be due to the inhibition of fatty acid synthase and lipoprotein lipase. (-)-Synephrine has also been shown to have a positive effect on the heart, as it stimulates the release of norepinephrine from nerve endings in the heart. It can be used as an ingredient in medicines for diabetes or weight loss. (-)-Synephrine can be synthesized by chiral resolution of racemic synephrine with (+)-phenylethylamine. The optical rotation of this compound can be determined by methods such as calibration or high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). HPLC analysis showed that methanolic extracts of Aurantium species contain synephrine.
