It can react with chloride to form chlorinated hydrocarbons such as dichloromethane and chloroform, or with chlorine to produce polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The reaction of 4-chloro-o-xylene and ammonium nitrate will produce nitrobenzene, which is used in the production of TNT explosives. Finally, 4-chloro-2,5-dimethoxyaniline can be synthesised from this chemical by reacting it with magnesium metal and nitrobenzene
