Beschreibung:6-(Hydroxymethyl)pterin is a pterin molecule that is synthesized by the body in response to inflammatory diseases and cancer. It has been found in urine samples, and can be used as an indicator of inflammation or cancer. 6-hydroxymethylpterin is a redox cycle intermediate that can be converted to 6-carboxylic acid by the enzyme hydroxymethyltransferase. The enzyme 6-hydroxymethylpterin reductase converts this intermediate back to 6-(hydroxymethyl)pterin, completing the cycle. This compound has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against bacteria such as S. aureus and E. coli, with a pH optimum at neutral pH.
