4-Methylindan is a synthetic hormone that has been shown to act as an androgen receptor agonist. It can be found naturally in plants such as anethole, which is used to make the spice, dill. 4-Methylindan binds to the androgen receptor and activates it by increasing the production of proteins that regulate gene expression. The activation of the receptor leads to increased levels of testosterone which can then bind to DNA and increase transcription rates. This process leads to increased muscle mass, decreased fat mass, and a reduction in body weight. 4-Methylindan also has immunological effects including inhibiting inflammation and reducing the production of cytokines.
