This compound is an analogue of the diphenyl ether ligand and has been used to study the steric effects of the substituents on the phosphorus atoms. The structure of cis-1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethylene was determined by x-ray crystallography and FTIR spectroscopy. It has been shown to have a similar geometry to that of the diphenyl ether with regard to its P-C bond lengths and angles. Cis-1,2-Bis(diphenylphosphino)ethylene has also been shown to form intermolecular hydrogen bonding and halide bonds with chloride ions.
