Biapenem is a human-derived beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls by binding to the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in the cytoplasmic membrane. Biapenem has been shown to inhibit infectious diseases caused by resistant mutants and has been used for treatment of urinary infections due to E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Proteus mirabilis. This drug interacts with other drugs that are metabolized by CYP3A4, such as erythromycin, terbinafine, cyclosporin, or tacrolimus. Biapenem has also been found to induce Toll-like receptors in cells and cause cell lysis.
