Cefoperazone is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. It is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae. Cefoperazone has been shown to inhibit the BCR-ABL kinase in vitro and in vivo, which may be useful for leukemia treatment. The optimum concentration of cefoperazone for treating an infection is determined using a chemiluminescence method. This antibiotic binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) on the surface of bacteria, preventing them from synthesizing peptidoglycan. The mechanism of action for cefoperazone differs from other antibiotics because it does not inhibit cell wall synthesis or protein synthesis.
