Beschreibung

25-Desacetylrifampin is a prodrug that is metabolized to the active form of rifampin by hydrolysis. It has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, which is caused by its ability to bind to matrix polysaccharide and pyrazinoic acid in the bacterial cell wall. 25-Desacetylrifampin can be used for the treatment of infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis and leprosy. Plasma levels of 25-desacetylrifampin in humans have been found to correlate with therapeutic efficacy, but there are no data on plasma levels in animals. The drug has also been shown to inhibit human hepatic cytochrome P450 enzymes and induce transfer reactions when administered with other drugs.
