Beschreibung

Moxalactam is an antibiotic that belongs to the group of β-lactam antibiotics. It is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed in vivo to moxalactam, its active form. Moxalactam has been shown to be active against Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis (VRE). Moxalactam binds to penicillin-binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall by competitive inhibition, preventing the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with enzymes required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. The reaction mechanism of moxalactam includes activation by cytochrome P450 enzymes followed by a nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl carbon atom of the β-lactam ring.
