2,4-Dichloro-5-methylphenol is an organic solvent and a triethanolamine salt of dichloro diethylamine. It is colorless to light yellow liquid with a strong, unpleasant odor. The compound reacts with chlorine in the presence of hydrocarbon to produce 2,4-dichloro-5-methylphenol chloride, which is used as a precursor for pentachlorophenol synthesis. 2,4-Dichloro-5-methylphenol is used as an intermediate in the production of a number of chemicals including trimethylamine and isopropyl ester.
