Cycloate is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the biosynthesis of fatty acids in bacteria. Cycloate binds to the enzyme fatty acid synthase, which catalyzes the conversion of malonic acid and acetyl-coenzyme A to form acetic acid and malonyl-coenzyme A. Cycloate also binds to a number of other enzymes including those involved in the synthesis of p-hydroxybenzoic acid and herbicides. Cycloate has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacterial strains including Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Salmonella typhimurium. It can be used as a herbicide for weed control on lawns or as an additive for crop production.
