1,6-Dimethanesulfonate-D-mannitol (DMSM) is a lung cell analog that has been used as a model system for the study of lung cancer. DMSM is taken up by cells and then phosphorylated to form DMSM-P, which can be detected using positron emission tomography (PET). The uptake of DMSM-P was found to be dependent on the presence of growth factors such as epidermal growth factor (EGF) and transforming growth factor beta 1. These findings suggest that 1,6-dimethanesulfonate-D-mannitol may be able to modulate the uptake and metabolism of other molecules in tumor cells by regulating their uptake rate. This drug has not been shown to have carcinogenic potential.
