10-Methylphenothiazine is a cation that has been found to have antioxidant properties. It is a radical with redox potentials of +1.7 and +0.5 V vs. NHE, respectively. 10-Methylphenothiazine also reacts with oxygen to form phenoxazine, which in turn reacts with hydrogen peroxide to produce the radical 2-hydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone. This radical can then react with other radicals to form stable products such as 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS). 10-Methylphenothiazine acts as a fluorescence probe for many reactions, including oxidation reactions and electron transfer reactions. The fluorescence intensity of 10-methylphenothiazine changes depending on the concentration of phenoxazine in solution and the reaction rate.
