• Beschreibung: 3-Chloro-10H-phenothiazine is a tervalent, cytosolic calcium ionophore with neuroprotective properties. It is synthesised by the reaction of 3-chlorophenothiazine with phosphorous pentachloride and reacts with formaldehyde to produce a reactive intermediate that is converted to the desired product by treatment with sodium bisulfite. 3-Chloro-10H-phenothiazine binds to an allosteric site on the enzyme butyrylcholinesterase and inhibits its activity, thereby preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine and increasing its concentrations in the nervous system. This leads to increased levels of acetylcholine and increased glycogenolysis in nerve cells, thereby providing protection against hypoxic injury.
