Cantharidic acid also induces apoptosis through a regulatory element, which may be responsible for the potent immunosuppressive effects of cantharidic acid. Clinical studies have found cantharidic acid to be effective against infectious diseases caused by bacteria, such as Salmonella and Staphylococcus.
