Anthracene is a priority pollutant for the US EPA. It is a genotoxic carcinogen that has been shown to cause cancer in humans. Anthracene may be found in wastewater from textile and paper mills, coal-fired power plants, petroleum refineries, and other industrial sites. The linear regression analysis of human lung tissue showed that anthracene is present in high concentrations in alveolar macrophages and can bind to DNA. The detection time of anthracene can be increased by ultrasonic extraction. Anthracene was found to be more genotoxic at higher concentrations and the presence of this compound was found to have an effect on organisms.END>
