4-Formamidobutanoic acid (4FBA) is a metabolite of formaldehyde that is generated in the environment by the oxidation of pyridine rings. 4FBA has been shown to be biologically stable, with an aerobic half-life of approximately 1 day and an anaerobic half-life of approximately 10 days. 4FBA can be used to evaluate the biological treatment efficiency of different wastewater treatments, as it is a measure for the amount of formaldehyde that has been mineralized. This compound also has shown to have antimicrobial effects on microbes such as bacteria and fungi.
