This drug binds to penicillin-binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall by competitive inhibition, preventing the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. Compound 23 also has been shown to have pharmacokinetic properties that may be advantageous for treating skin cancer.
