• Beschreibung: 5,8-Dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (5,8-DMT) is a drug that has been approved in Japan for the diagnosis of bowel disease and atrial fibrillation. The intracellular Ca2+ levels are increased by 5,8-DMT, which activates voltage-dependent calcium channels. The activation of these channels leads to an increase in cytosolic free Ca2+ concentration and cell lysis. 5,8-DMT also causes mitochondrial membrane potential to decrease and induces cell death via apoptosis. It is used as a chemotherapeutic agent for the treatment of cancer tissues with high levels of p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHBA), such as breast cancer cells. 5,8-DMT also exhibits physiological effects on the heart muscle cells and can be used to treat congestive heart failure.
