5(6)-carboxyfluorescein diacetate is an autophagy-inducing agent that has been shown to elicit a significant cytotoxic response in human leukemia cells. 5(6)-carboxyfluorescein diacetate has also been used to identify the presence of intracellular bacteria by labeling the cell wall. This compound is a fluorescent probe that binds to the cell membrane, and can be detected with optical sensors. 5(6)-carboxyfluorescein diacetate has also been shown to inhibit cancer growth in animal models, and is currently being evaluated for its potential use as an anticancer therapy.
