The optical properties of this chemical make it suitable for use as an ultraviolet absorber in plastics or dyes. 3-Bromopropane has been shown to be a monomer that polymerizes under acidic conditions to form polymers with significant commercial value. It has been used in the production of polypropylene, polyethylene, and polystyrene.
