Tetramethylene glycol dimethacrylate is a synthetic monomer that is used in the production of polymeric biomaterials. The polymerization of this monomer is initiated by a free radical mechanism, which leads to a high degree of crosslinking between the chains and a low degree of water absorption. Tetramethylene glycol dimethacrylate has been shown to be non-toxic to cells in culture. The polymerization process can be controlled by the addition of an initiator, such as benzoyl peroxide or AIBN. Tetramethylene glycol dimethacrylate has also been shown to have good resistance against radiation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as fatty acids and water vapor.
