Biphenyl-4-sulfonate is a chemical compound that can be found in the environment and is also used as an intermediate in the synthesis of some pharmaceuticals. It has been shown to increase cortisol concentrations in tissue culture. This effect may be due to biphenyl-4-sulfonate's ability to inhibit the activity of phosphodiesterase, which breaks down the neurotransmitter PGE2. Biphenyl-4-sulfonate also inhibits DNA polymerase, which may lead to its use as a potential therapy for chronic bowel disease. Biphenyl-4-sulfonate has been shown to bind to tnf-α, which may lead to its use as a potential drug for inflammatory bowel disease.
