This inhibition may be due to its ability to act as a competitive inhibitor and bind to the active site. 3MMB has also been shown to have the ability to bind to DNA, RNA, and proteins. It can also act as a buffer by binding carboxylic acids in order to prevent their degradation. 3MMB has been studied for use as a topochemical catalyst for carboxylic acid oxidation reactions because it does not suffer from deactivation by hydrogen peroxide or oxygenation of the substrate.
