Cyclohexyl 2,4-dimethylphenyl ketone is a potentiator of the glutamate receptor. It has been shown to have antidepressant-like activity in animal models of depression and was shown to have potential as a treatment for cancer. Cyclohexyl 2,4-dimethylphenyl ketone binds with high affinity to the NMDA receptor subtype. It is structurally similar to glutamate and acts as an allosteric modulator at this receptor. Cyclohexyl 2,4-dimethylphenyl ketone is able to enhance the activation of the receptor by glutamate and may be able to inhibit some cancers by blocking tumor growth or inducing apoptosis. The increase in neurotransmission that occurs when cyclohexyl 2,4-dimethylphenyl ketone binds with the NMDA receptor subtype may be due to its ability to bind with extracellular regions of the receptor rather than those in the membrane.
