Beschreibung

Procinolol is a beta-adrenergic receptor blocking drug that has been used as a prescription medication for treating high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases. Procinolol is used in the treatment of glaucoma, with the purpose of reducing intraocular pressure. It is also used in the treatment of congestive heart failure and ventricular dysfunction. Procinolol is not effective against cardiac arrhythmias or lipoprotein-associated arthrosclerosis. It is available as an oral tablet to be taken once daily, or as a reconstituted solution for topical administration to the eye. Procinolol blocks the beta-adrenergic receptors, which are found on cells in many organs including the heart and lungs. This action slows down heart rate and lowers blood pressure by decreasing peripheral resistance and afterload on the heart. Procinolol also reduces secretion of fluid from blood vessels into the eye, thereby lowering intraocular pressure.
