MAO is a betulinic acid amide derivative and interacts with the transcriptase and RNA polymerase of HIV type 1. The immunodeficiency of MAO was tested in vitro on human T cells, which showed that it had no effect on the growth of these cells. This may be due to its inability to cross the cell membrane.
