5-Carboxyoxindole is a synthetic compound that has been shown to be cytotoxic in vitro and in vivo. It has been found to bind to the DNA of cancer cells, preventing DNA synthesis and replication, resulting in cell death. The mechanism of 5-carboxyoxindole is not completely understood but it has been suggested that it inhibits the production of ATP, leading to cell death. Techniques used to synthesize this compound include multistep reactions with yields up to 69%. These reactions are typically carried out at room temperature, although they can also be performed under reflux or microwave conditions.
