Monosodium maleate is a salt that is used in wastewater treatment. It is also a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of cancer and other conditions such as osteoarthritis. Monosodium maleate is an antigen, which means it can stimulate the immune system. Monosodium maleate also has adsorption kinetics that depend on the pH of the solution. The monovalent and divalent forms of this compound are found in citric acid and malic acid respectively. Maleic acid, one of its derivatives, is found in asenapine (brand name: Saphris). Maleates are salts with valency 2+, which means they can react with alkali metals such as sodium hydroxide to form sodium salts. Malonic acid is a ketone that reacts with maleic acids to form esters such as malates or succinates.
