4'-Demethyldesoxypodophyllotoxin is a fructus that has anticancer activity against human carcinoma cells. It is also an antioxidative agent and exhibits antitumour activity by inhibiting the lipid peroxidation process, thereby preventing the production of cytotoxic free radicals. The antioxidant activity of 4'-demethyldesoxypodophyllotoxin was comparable to that of podophyllotoxin. Podophyllotoxin can be found in many Chinese medicinal herbs, such as Podophyllum hexandrum Wall. (P. erythraeum Linn.), which has been used for centuries for the treatment of cancer. 4'-Demethyldesoxypodophyllotoxin has been shown to inhibit the growth of lymphocytic leukemia and carcinoma cell lines in vitro at a concentration of 20-40 μM.
