Beschreibung

Caspofungin is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that inhibits the synthesis of D-alanyl-D-alanine and is distributed in the US by Merck. It has been shown to be effective against a variety of bacteria, fungi, and protozoa. Caspofungin also has a role in treating auto immune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis. Caspofungin binds to the hydroxyl group on peptidoglycan precursors, inhibiting microbial cell wall synthesis. This drug also inhibits choroidal neovascularization (CNV) formation by preventing vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) release from retinal pigment epithelial cells. The drug has been shown to be effective in cases of infection caused by microbes such as Staphylococcus aureus or Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
