The reaction rate increased with increasing temperature and concentration. The crystal structure of 3,5-dimethylpyridine N-oxide was determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The mechanism of this reaction is proposed to involve nucleophilic attack of the amine on the nitro group followed by elimination of water to give the n-oxide product.
