L-Ara-C inhibits the synthesis of nucleic acid and protein. It has been shown to be active against cancer cells in vitro and in vivo, as well as infectious diseases such as HIV. L-Ara-C is also used as a reagent for studying the function of mitochondrial enzymes. The drug is given intravenously or orally to patients with cancer or other diseases who are receiving chemotherapy.
