It has been shown to be effective in the detection of sulfoxide, fluoride, and hydrogen peroxide. 3-Bromo-9-n-octyl-9H-carbazole is also sensitive to proton transfer reactions with anions. The molecule's fluorescent properties can be used for sensing hydrogen bond interactions with functional groups and other molecules.
