Beschreibung

(2Z)-4-[(2-Methylphenyl)amino]-4-oxobut-2-enoic acid is a cyclic compound with a carbonyl group and an amide group. It has two conformations, the cis (or Z) and trans (or E) isomers. The cis form has a hydrogen bond between the carbonyl oxygen atom and the amide nitrogen atom. This hydrogen bond increases the stability of the molecule in its cis form. The trans form does not have this hydrogen bond and is more reactive because it is less stable. When heated, both forms of this molecule will react with thiourea to produce urea and 2-methylphenylacetic acid.
