It has been shown to inhibit apoptotic cell death in mammalian tissue, as well as cancer cells. Pico145 binds to the hk-2 protein and blocks the opening of non-selective cation channels. This inhibition leads to an increase in cytosolic calcium ion concentration (Ca2+) and a subsequent activation of proapoptotic proteins such as p53, Bax, and Caspase-3.
