Beschreibung

Ophiobolin A is a natural compound that is found in the marine sponge Ophioplocus erythraeus. It has been shown to cause apoptosis in cancer cells by inhibiting the mitochondrial membrane potential and increasing cytosolic calcium levels. This molecule also inhibits both caspase-dependent and caspase-independent cell death pathways, which may be due to its ability to inhibit calmodulin. The cytotoxicity of ophiobolin A has been demonstrated using a model system of human prostate cancer cells, and it has been shown to have physiological effects on human skin cells. Ophiobolin A is soluble in water, can be purified by preparative hplc, and shows specific binding with cell nuclei.
