4-Oxopent-2-enoic acid is an intermediate in the synthesis of levulinate, which functions as a cofactor for various enzyme reactions. It is also a precursor to the antihypertensive drug c1-c6. 4-Oxopent-2-enoic acid can be synthesized by photooxidation or through asymmetric synthesis. It has been shown to be a noncompetitive inhibitor of racemase and norbixin, which is used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.
