2,4,5-T is an organophosphorus insecticide that is a mixture of three esters, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T) and 2-(2-chloroethoxy)phenoxypropionic acid. The chemical name for this mixture is O-(2-chloroethyl) O-(3,4-dichloropropyl) phosphorothioate. This pesticide has been banned in many countries because it breaks down into dioxin after being exposed to sunlight or other sources of ultraviolet light. Dioxin is a potent carcinogen and has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals. It can also cause birth defects and changes in the immune system.
The dichlorprop ester of 2,4,-D was first synthesized by methylation of the chlor
