3-Chloro-2,4(3H,5H)-furandione is a furandione that has been isolated from the ascidian Ascidia. It is a reactive substance with a pyridine ring and two tetronic acid groups. 3-Chloro-2,4(3H,5H)-furandione can be produced by thermal treatment of tetronic acid in the presence of pyridine. It yields mainly dialkyl furanones and butenolides as products. 3-Chloro-2,4(3H,5H)-furandione undergoes cycloaddition reactions at temperatures below 200 °C to form bicyclic compounds containing four fused six-membered rings.
