N-Formyl octabase is a chemical compound that is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of dextromethorphan. It can be obtained by reacting formaldehyde with octylamine and decarboxylating it to yield N-formyl octamide. This reaction relies on the use of a strong base, such as sodium hydroxide, to convert the amide into an enolate. A second reaction involving the addition of a nucleophile, such as hydrogen chloride or potassium hydroxide, will result in the formation of N-formyl octabase. The product is purified by column chromatography or recrystallization.
