The oral bioavailability of cefixime is approximately 30% and it has an elimination half-life of 1.5 hours. The drug is metabolized primarily through oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes, which are induced by other drugs, such as erythromycin and clarithromycin, or enzyme inducers such as phenobarbital, rifampin, or carbamazepine. Cefixime inhibits bacterial growth through competitive inhibition with penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are required for bacterial cell wall synthesis and protein synthesis.
