Imazapic is a herbicide that belongs to the class of imidazolinone herbicides. Imazapic inhibits the activity of enzymes involved in fatty acid synthesis, leading to the death of weeds. Imazapic has been shown to have a low toxicity for plants and animals, including humans. It binds to copper ions and forms a copper complex that inhibits fatty acid synthase, acetyl-CoA carboxylase, phospholipase A2, and other enzymes. Imazapic has also been shown to be effective against chinese herb (Eupatorium fortunei) and other plants. The mode of action is thought to be similar to that of clopyralid and picloram.
