Ethylenediamine is a chemical compound that is used as an intermediate in the production of polyurethane, nylon, and other organic chemicals. It is also used in the manufacturing of dyes and pharmaceuticals. Ethylenediamine reacts with sodium hydroxide to produce ethylene glycol. This reaction proceeds by elimination of water from the amine group to form an alkoxide ion which reacts with the hydroxide ion to form ethylene glycol. The reaction also produces heat and hydrogen gas.
