Acifluorfen is a herbicide that inhibits the synthesis of chlorophyll in plants. It binds to the light-harvesting complexes of photosynthetic systems and prevents the transfer of electrons to oxygen, thereby inhibiting photosynthesis. Acifluorfen is used as a pre-emergent or post-emergent herbicide for control of annual and perennial weeds in agricultural crops, noncropland areas, and rights-of-way. Acifluorfen has been shown to cause sublethal doses in rats, which had no effect on locomotor activity but did affect biochemical properties. Acifluorfen has also been found to be carcinogenic in rats at high doses, but not humans.
