It is also found in some plants and fungi. 5alpha-Androstan-3-one can be synthesized from cholesterol, or it can be formed by the hydroxylation of testosterone in response to the action of cytochrome P450 enzymes. The synthesis of 5alpha-androstan-3-one from cholesterol requires a significant amount of energy, so it is not likely to be a major route for its production.
