This drug has been shown to inhibit the release of monoamine neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin from rat brain synaptosomes. It also blocks the uptake of these neurotransmitters in rat brain synaptosomes and inhibits their deamination by monoamine oxidase. The toxic effects of this drug have been studied in rats and monkeys and found to be similar to those of amphetamine. In HIV infection, (2S)-2-amino-1-phenyl-1-propanone hydrochloride has been shown to reduce the rate of viral replication by inhibiting the activity of reverse transcriptase and proteases.
