Allethrin is a pyrethroid that is used as an insecticide. It binds to the voltage-dependent sodium channels in the nerve cell membrane, which results in an increase in the mitochondrial membrane potential and subsequent opening of potassium channels. Allethrin has been shown to have high resistance to mosquitoes, with a resistance ratio of over 100:1. The insecticide has also been shown to be toxic to pro-apoptotic protein, which is involved in the regulation of programmed cell death (PCD). Allethrin has demonstrated chemical stability and linear calibration curve characteristics that make it an ideal candidate for use as a drug transporter.
