L-Aspartic acid is an amino acid that is found in the body and plays an important role in many metabolic reactions. L-Aspartic acid can be used as a nutritional supplement to treat metabolic disorders such as chronic viral hepatitis, obesity, and bowel disease. This amino acid has been shown to have a basic pH and is active at low concentrations. L-Aspartic acid is metabolized by hydrolysis to oxaloacetate and glutamate. It may also act as an intermediate in the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine or polyamines. L-Aspartic acid has been shown to stimulate basic fibroblasts in culture, indicating it may be useful for treating skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis.
