(R,S)-a-Amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid hydrobromide (AMPA) is a competitive antagonist at the glutamate receptor. It is used as a drug to treat some metabolic disorders and neurological diseases. AMPA blocks voltage-dependent calcium channels in neurons, which prevents depolarization and slows neuronal activity. AMPA also has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis in neurons through its effects on the synaptic terminal. Chronic exposure of rats to this drug can lead to neuronal death due to oxidative stress and increased levels of reactive oxygen species.
